Southern California’s oldest family nature club is celebrating its fourth anniversary on July 24. Inland Empire Kids Outdoors was founded on July 24, 2008 by a group of families who were interested in connecting their families to nature and the outdoors. Since then, Kids Outdoors leaders have hosted over 350 outings and the group has grown to include nearly 800 families.
Inland Empire Kids Outdoors members will be celebrating their anniversary on July 24th at U.C. Riverside Botanical Gardens, the site of the group’s first meetup. “Our own kids are getting older, but we still provide many opportunities for families with children of all ages to get outdoors and explore.” says Megan Brousseau, manager of Kids Outdoors. Over the past few months alone, members have picked blueberries, hiked the Santa Rosa Plateau and Mt. Rubidoux, and explored the Rubidoux Nature Center.
Kids Outdoors founder Wendy Sparks relocated to Oregon in 2010, leaving the group in the capable hands of volunteer leaders. “It is truly amazing how many parents stepped in to keep the group going.” says Sparks, who spent the past two years managing the group from her home near Salem, Oregon. “Now that Megan has stepped in as manager, I am excited to see how the group will evolve under her leadership.” Brousseau plans to continue the group’s mission of connecting families to nature and the outdoors and…
