Program

Adopt-A-Stream

The Anchorage Waterways Council (AWC) is partnering with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to develop an Adopt-a-Stream model for the Anchorage School District (ASD). Year one will build on Anchorage Waterways Council's relationship and experience with Polaris K-12, where a successful program similar to Adopt-a-Stream has evolved. Begich Middle School and King Career Center, both located very close to Chester Creek, are participating in the pilot program. The goals are to train a few science teachers and students in water quality monitoring procedures, use these science classes to collect data near their schools using standard scientific protocol, enter the data into a database accessible on the web, and use the data and other technologies, i.e. GIS and GPS, to analyze, visualize, display, and share findings in a variety of venues. The students involved in the projects will spend part of their school day in an outdoor classroom, and the goal is to initiate activities that improve riparian habitat and foster stewardship.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
