No Child Left Inside

Introduced in 2005 by Governor M. Jodi Rell, and coordinated by the CT Department of Environmental Protection, No Child Left Inside, a major state initiative, is designed to reconnect families with the outdoors, build the next generation of environmental stewards and showcase Connecticut state parks and forests.

We have just kicked off our third year for No Child Left Inside: The Great Park Pursuit - The Connecticut State Parks Family Adventure.

The Great Park Pursuit will take Connecticut families on a tour of seven different state parks and forests over seven weeks. (A family includes one person 18 or over, and one under 18.)

Clues found at www.NoChildLeftInside.org will lead families to each park or forest where they will complete a variety of activities, which may include hiking, letterboxing, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing and camping.

Registration is open April 1 through April 25, 2008. The Great Park Pursuit begins on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Hammonasset Beach State Park, Madison, CT and ends on June 22.

As part of No Child Left Inside we have also established partnerships with the Department of Agriculture and will be bringing families out to farms across CT; the Department of Public Health and the CT Obesity Council to establish bike tours and focus on healthy lifestyles; and with the Department of Social Services - Grandparents as Parents program to work with older caregivers to help get their families outdoors.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
