Bloomers! Schoolyard

The BLOOMERS! SCHOOLYARD is part of an engaging children’s educational experience that brings the magical world of nature to life.

Bloomers! Schoolyard is the hands-on gardening and healthy eating program that’s EASY for the educator and FUN for the children. One part of a three-part brand, the Bloomers! Schoolyard program delivers an educational and entertainment experience seamlessly integrated into any pre-school through kindergarten classroom.

Bloomers! mission is to bring the magical world of gardens, flowers, plants and nature to life in exciting new ways for young children. Our vision for Bloomers! is to propel this excitement in children from an early age, teach them a new way to play and interact with the natural environment around them, and ignite their passion for a healthier tomorrow.

The Bloomers Schoolyard curriculum is comprised of two, nine to eleven-week programs which engage children ages 3 to 6, pre-school through first grade, in a program of seed germinating to planting and growing their own crops of vegetables. Developmental milestones and Educational moments are embedded throughout the program via hands on activities and inquiry-based discussions.

Along the way the children are read stories about the Bloomers! characters’ adventures in learning about the wonders of nature and the hands on process of growing plants and trees. These stories, and the characters known as the Bloomers!, reinforce and guide the children, the educators and the parents through an adventure in gardening that is both educational and entertaining.

Utilizing the classroom task chart, each week the children are paired and perform specific tasks that include watering the Bloomers! know + grow Garden, as well as counting leaves and sprouts and measuring the growth of the plants. The children keep track of their crop’s progress in the classroom by writing their findings on the task chart, and documenting by drawing pictures of the plants. Each week a new Bloomers! Island story is read to the students and an inquiry based discussion follows.

At the end of the second week of the Schoolyard program, an informative letter is sent home to the parents thanking them for their child’s participation in the program. The letter includes a code for a free six-month subscription for the child and an extra code for a friend or relative to join the Bloomers! Island site to reinforce the hands-on plant science and growing lessons (in a fun and entertaining way)! But more than that, Bloomers! is the online game that wants children to go out and get their hands dirty and gives them points in the game for doing so! Research conducted by the Bloomers! team has shown that this is something very important to parents and educators.

In the ninth week of the Schoolyard program the children and educators do a Harvest Day where they actually harvest their crop and enjoy a snack of raw, blanched and blanched with cheese Snow Peas and other vegetables that they have grown.

The Bloomers Schoolyard curriculum is designed to seamlessly insert into an existing classroom schedule so as not to disrupt any educational milestones required by a school district. After the nine-week curriculum is completed, there is a vacation break and then it begins again with a new crop of vegetables appropriate to the regional environment.

“It’s amazing how much children love fruits and vegetables when they grow them themselves. Thank you Bloomers Schoolyard!”

Winter Break Camp: Primitive Skills & Ancient Living

8:00 am 3:00 pm
Monday, December 19 - Friday, December 23

Sign up for the week or single days, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm each day. An extended day option until 6:00 pm is available.

How did indigenous people living in the area survive the cold winters? What food was available to eat? We'll explore the grounds of the Schuylkill Center this week in search of the answers. Together, we'll build shelters that will help keep us warm, learn how to build a fire and cook outside. We'll also explore what animals are active in our neighborhood this time of year and take a closer look at what adaptations allow them to stay warm.

Cost:
$45/day members; $55/day non-members
or
$200/week member; $250/week non-members
Extended Day Fee: $15/day (8:00 am to 6:00 pm)

For more information or to register, please call 215-482-7300 x 110 or email scee@schuylkillcenter.org.

Seedlings: Ready for Winter (A Nature for the Young program)

Monday December 12th, 10:30 am - 11:30 am and 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

There are lots of birds and animals that live at the Schuylkill Center during the winter season. Sometimes finding food can be a challenge for these creatures. We will create a winter feast for birds and a take a short hike to find places to put our small feeding stations.

Seedlings programs are for curious young naturalists-to-be between the ages of 3 and 5 years and their parents and caregivers. Each program highlights a different aspect of nature and encourages children and their caregivers to explore the natural world together.

Programs are offered every other Monday, with your choice of a morning or afternoon session for each program. Adult participation is required.

Cost:
$6 members; $8 non-members

Nature Play Western Australia

If you’re a parent looking for ideas on how to get your children more involved in outdoor activities in Western Australia, then you’ve come to the right place.

There are lots of reasons why kids should make the move from the TV or computer room to the outdoors. Probably the best reason is that it’s fun, and you and your kids will be happier and healthier doing things together.

But there are other important considerations. Research undertaken around the world indicates there are real benefits for children being involved in nature.

YMCA Camp Minikani Family Nature Club

Each month, families from the Milwaukee area get together at YMCA Camp Minikani to explore and stretch their curiosity together. While the group is relatively new, we are excited to meet new families that bring their own knowledge and enthusiasm to each outing. We meet the first Tuesday of each month from 6-7pm, rain or shine, to hike through Camp Minikani, exploring the lakes, forests, prairies, and marshes together. Other adventures may include nature crafts, fire building, outdoor survival, animal encounters, and seasonal recreation. We'd love to have you join us: just dress for the weather, bring a flashlight, and a sense of wonder!
Occurs monthly: on every first Tuesday of the month [starting Sep 6, 2011 ending Jun 5, 2012]

Kansans for Children and Nature, KCCN

On April 13, 2009, Governor Kathleen Sebelius issued an Executive Order creating the Kansas Coalition for Children in Nature (KCCN). The KCCN was created to foster Kansas youth’s appreciation, understanding and involvement with the outdoors.
“Kansas is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty and this coalition will work to make sure Kansas children experience all that our state has to offer,” Sebelius said. “Environmental education is the first step toward helping our children learn to protect and preserve our planet.”
The Kansas Coalition for Children in Nature (KCCN) will promote outdoor learning experiences and environmental education for the young people of Kansas and provide ongoing support for these endeavors.

Wild Earth programs draw on a broad spectrum of teachings from indigenous cultures to modern natural sciences. Our programs offer adventure and fun, primitive skills and crafts, awareness games, and story and song, facilitated by multi-generational mentors. They foster individual and group awareness and a deeper connection to the Earth.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
