Mission:Explore

Worldwide

Mission:Explore is a project to get (young) people exploring and seeing the world in new ways. We use missions as challenges to tackle risk aversion and to encourage learning about environmental, economic, social and political issues.

Book
The Mission:Explore book includes 102 missions and is small enough to fit in your pocket. It is ungendered and reflects a wide range of children (and animals). Missions include investigating the murder of animals, finding lost cats and having a conversation with a cow.

The book was published in the UK in April 2010 and will be available in the United States at during August 2011. All royalties from the book are invested in free copies for deprived children.

Website and iPhone app
While these include 20+ 'anywhere' missions, the website and app are currently focussed on London. they include 1,000+ missions, many of which can be attempted in other locations. We plan for the missions on the website and app to be available in other places soon and are keen to hear from anyone that wants to work with us.

Blue Wind Nature Camp

Catskill Mountains, N.Y.
50 Harrison Ave.
Lynbrook, New York 11563 United States

This event/program is Yearlong.

This camp is dedicated to provide children an experience living closely with nature that they otherwise might never know. No where in the world is there such a stark contrast between easily accessible wilderness and nature deprived children, than in New York City and its surrounding boroughs.
We teach and practice New York Native American lifestyle authentically. We live in real Teepees. We have an outdoor kitchen, and a tented dining area. We have a lake for swimming, fishing, and boating. Our "totally green" lifestyle means no fossil fuels and solar electricity only. The campers get to experience the reward of fully tending the animals and crops, and then utilizing what they yield, such as eggs, wool, and vegetables. Agriculture, farming, swimming, sports, leather crafting, tool making, pottery, and music, are just some of the dozens of nature-based activities to choose from through out the day.

National Green Week

Green Education Foundation
153 Washington St.
East Walpole, Massachusetts 02032 United States

Green Education Foundation (GEF) is mobilizing over three million children to participate in environmental educational programs during National Green Week 2011 (Feb. 7-11, 2011). This annual program provides Pre K-12 schools with extensive standards based environmental curricula coupled with several hands-on components. The goal is to motivate and encourage students to adopt new green behaviors that promote the health of the planet and themselves.

National Green Week 2011 Overview
Following are some of the GEF hands-on eco-challenge programs that schools can participate in during National Green Week 2011:

-Waste-Free Snacks & Lunches: Students nationwide will participate in the largest school based waste-reduction program in history by simply pledging to carry their drinks, snacks and home packed lunches in reusable containers for the week. Students will weigh snack trash both before and during National Green Week 2011 to determine their trash savings. The combined totals will be tallied and posted on the GEF website on Earth Day (April 22).

-Green Energy Challenge: Students will audit their classrooms, schools and homes to find energy leaks and correct them in an effort to reduce energy consumption.

-Green Schools Initiative: Students and educators will become knowledgeable on green building protocol per US Green Building Councils (USGBC) guidelines in an effort to upgrade their school building and landscape for optimal occupant health and environmental improvements. GEF is the education sector partner for USGBC.

Green Schools Initiative - Green Building Program

Green Education Foundation
153 Washington St.
East Walpole, Massachusetts 02032 United States

Want to green your school? This nationwide program will arm students with the skills necessary to audit and improve their schools according to the US Green Building Council's guidelines for green building requirements.

Background
Schools spend over $6 billion nationwide on energy each year, many spending more on energy than on school supplies. The Consortium for Energy Efficiency contends that schools waste up to 25% of energy due to poorly designed or outdated systems. The US Department of Energy estimates that schools could save up to 50% of their energy costs by adopting fairly simple energy-saving measures and renovations. Some estimates suggest that achieving a 25% reduction in energy costs would save a staggering $1.5 billion. These savings could fund 30,000 new teacher salaries, 40 million textbooks or hundreds of thousands of computers.

In addition, a growing body of research indicates that indoor air quality has a pronounced effect on the health, well-being and productivity of occupants. This is particularly true of children who are more sensitive to pollutants. Improving ventilation and the heating/cooling systems can help prevent asthma and sickness as well as increase student performance. A healthy environment and indoor air quality need to be considered vital components of any and all schools.

The good news is that retrofitting existing buildings is easier than ever before, and Green Education Foundation (GEF) is committed to helping schools accomplish these goals while simultaneously educating students on the importance of green buildings and energy and resource efficiency. GEF has created the Green Schools Initiative for this purpose.

Program Overview
The GEF Green Schools Initiative, which launched in November 2009, is a multi-faceted effort that will provide students with valuable skills and aid schools by creating a focus for their capital management plans. The goals of the program are multi-fold and include educating and empowering students to lower their schools' operating costs, shrink waste sent to landfills, improve interior air quality and reduce energy and water usage.

The Green Schools Initiative educational program is guided by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) standards for what constitutes a green building. The online course will provide students with comprehensive instruction on what materials are utilized to build green buildings, what renewable sources of energy are and their availability for use in schools, specific energy and water reduction and conservation strategies and the effective changes necessary to upgrade interiors and landscapes to accommodate for green efficiencies. Upon completion of the course students will utilize GEF's green building, energy and water checklists to audit their schools to uncover areas for green improvements (with the help of a trained professional).

Students will be instructed to prioritize areas they uncovered for enhanced structural efficiencies (based upon the greatest need/ROI) along with instructions on how to incorporate changes to improve shortcomings. Students and administrators will be given step-by-step instructions on how to request funding from government and utilities companies to pay for necessary upgrades.

Objective and Results
GEF's objective is to teach green practices that are sustainable and measurable to high school students, school administrators, families and communities. Results of the program will be gathered through mandatory pre- and post-program surveys which will detail changes in actions, habits and attitudes towards environmental sustainability.

08/11/2010

This is a great group of active parents. We meet up most Thursdays at 10. I find the earlier I get out of the house the better I feel and more productive I am the rest of the day. My little one often takes a nap in the car or in the baby carrier and is tired out enough to nap when we get home too. While we certainly aren't sprinting up the trails, this group is intended for mamas and papas to get a little exercise. Kiddos are either worn or in strollers. We take our time and wait for each other to tend to our little one's needs. We also break to let the munchkins get out and enjoy nature themselves. I try to make every other week a stroller friendly event.

I usually come with Ergo, frame pack and BOB stroller. If you would like to test drive one of these before you go out and invest in one, just email me ahead of time and I'll make sure it is ready to go.

Hilltop Ski Area Trails - Wide trails are jogging stroller friendly as it is not paved. I would suggest a carrier for younger babies to prevent giggling the smaller babies too much.

Park in the parking lot on the road before the gate.

Creating a Climate For Change

Kinark Outdoor Centre
PO Box 730
Minden, Ontario K0M 2K0 Canada

This event/program is Yearlong.

Kinark Outdoor Centre is a leader in children's and family outdoor education. Using our trained staff and newly retrofitted solar powered recreation hall (we have secured funding for the capital element of the project) we will be piloting a new, innovative program that highlights the connections between families and children and how they can work together to reduce their carbon footprint. The program will have two parts, one for students to learn and be an environmental leader within their families and one for families to learn environmental practices together.

The student program has the children learning through the education system through curriculum integrated lessons facilitated at the Kinark Outdoor Centre. The centre will be partnering with the local school board, Trillium Lakelands District School Board to offer 44 grade 5 classes (1100+ students) a fully subsidized energy efficiency program that will directly correspond with the new solar technology and educational unit installed in the recreation hall. The program will encompass many elements of energy conservation and renewable and alternative energy using unique hands on activities. Not only will the students see first hand what can be done with alternative and behind the meter energy, as the Outdoor Centre's site exemplifies the different technologies (solar, straw bale insulation, etc.), but they will also work hands-on with the technologies in our solar and wind powered labs. They will explore how and why these different forms of energies can be used for electricity, learn strategies on how they can reduce their family's environmental impact and leave with helpful knowledge and learning material to share with their family.

The second part is the family programming; similar to the children's programming, we're looking to facilitate an energy efficiency/climate change program at the Kinark Outdoor Centre for families from rural neighbourhoods in our community and surrounding community (Haliburton Highlands, Peterborough and Simcoe area). This program will engage both parents and children in activities that link positive environmental practices with their everyday surroundings and routines that will directly help with their carbon footprint. We will facilitate four day long programs (approx.12 families each weekend, total of 240 people) where the families will be bussed to our Outdoor Centre on consecutive Saturdays in July and August, where they will take part in an innovative program that includes outdoor education and interactive activities about energy efficiency, environmental impacts and strategies to take home. Part of the process will be to facilitate parents taking on a leadership role and providing the resources for them to continue providing energy saving practices in their own home to reduce their carbon footprint.

Place-based Education

~Using the pond behind the school to teach ecosystems.

~Interviewing local lawmakers to understand the political process.

~Visiting a local business to facilitate an understanding of supply and demand.

Place-based is the belief that teaching happens most effectively through use of the local culture, politics, art, environment, economy, geography etc.... creating a concrete context in which students can build connections to the content being taught. It emphasizes the idea that knowledge spirals and builds upon itself to build a greater global understanding. Grounded in the philosophy is the notion that experiential learning and activating the learners' prior knowledge facilitates an optimal learning experience.

In a society globalized by the Internet, television, various print media, and trade, we often lose sight of what is immediately around us. We take our local environment for granted, allowing ourselves to be unaware of simple things that effect our everyday lives, such as where our food comes from. Fortunately many have realized this disconnect and have put forth great efforts to study and mend it at the greater social level, specifically in education. Gary Snyder the famous poet, philosopher and environmental activist has addressed this concern through volumes of work. In his book A Place in Space he suggests, “Knowing who we are and knowing where we are intimately linked.” David Orr, Gregory Smith and other educators actively promote “place-based” education, which is described as “grounding education in local phenomena and students’ lived experience.

The Gales of November

Stephen Persinger Recreation Center

Thursday, November 11; 6:30 - 8 p.m.

Many legendary storms have passed over the Great Lakes region in November as the weather transitions from fall to winter. The most well known of these may be the Edmund Fitzgerald storm of November 10, 1975. However, two other noteworthy storms of the 20th century have been the Armistice Day storm of November 11, 1940 and the Great Lakes storm of November 7-10, 1913. The 1913 storm killed over 250 people and sank 19 ships. This program will discuss the nature of these storms and what made them so deadly. Dr. Jim Angel, Illinois State Climatologist.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
