To Get Kids to the Wilderness, Oakland Group Trains and Equips Trip Leaders A peaceful autumn afternoon on San Francisco’s Baker Beach, with its rhythmic crash of waves, was pierced by excited yelps and hollers. Over the crest of the dunes, dozens of children raced down the sandy path toward the water’s edge, playfully calling to one another in English and Spanish. The children, 6th graders from Urban Promise Academy (UPA), an Oakland middle school, were on a camping trip in the Presidio of San Francisco.
