To Revive Hunting, States Turn to the Classroom

West Virginia is the latest state to pass legislation aimed at attracting young people to hunting. The new law will allow hunting education classes in schools where at least 20 students express an interest such classes. Though some parents are not pleased, others welcome the new law. In the words of one hunting advocate, “While the soccer mom watches her son or daughter play a sport, hunting involves both parent and child learning and experiencing together.”

Acording to Sally Jewell, REI's president and chief executive officer, if REI is going to bill itself as a company that brings people and nature together, it's got to do something other than just sell things. “As a society, we need a way to bridge the disconnect between people and nature, between children and nature,” she said.

Kids' Patch has sections for parents and teachers, with projects and activities that will help your children learn about our environment. The Kids’ Patch is an online initiative of Natural Biodiversity, a nonprofit program in Johnstown, Pa., dedicated to invasive-plant control and native-habitat restoration. The site was developed by Natural Biodiversity with support from USDA APHIS, Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps/AmeriCorps, National Wildlife Federation, and the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds.

WHY AGRITOURISM ? “The simplest definition of agritourism is anything that brings the buyer to the property,” said Miles Phillips, who oversees nature tourism in Texas. Nature tourism includes not only agritourism but also hunting, fishing and adventure tourism. “There’s a lot of activity in the whole sector,” Phillips said, which has been spurred, in part, by Richard Louv’s 2005 book Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder.
