The My City Too Report (launch November 27th, details below) brings attention to the impact our built environment has on the wellbeing of children in Toronto. The document is the culmination of a one-year research project to better understand why children’s independent mobility and outdoor free play is declining and offer solutions to revive and encourage children’s full participation in the public realm in Toronto.
Funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the two organizations were galvanized by research produced by UNICEF which ranked Canada’s children a dismal 25th out of 41 peer countries when it comes to children’s overall wellbeing (2017 Index of Child and Youth Wellbeing and Sustainability). In addition, they found mounting research that Canadian children are spending less time playing outside than previous generations, and that children’s active and independent travel has declined in the last few decades.
