New research studies in Barcelona show connection between time spent near or in green places and improvements in youth cognitive development. Another Finnish study indicates time spent outdoors improves mental health, and reduces stress and muscle tension.
Park for the People – Philadelphia has a goal to create suitable green spaces within a 10-minute walk of every home in the city. Focusing on underserved areas, they have updated two of nine public schoolyards and recreation centers that needed some extra care and improvements.
In Philadelphia, better parks and green schoolyards are improving underserved communities. Often the largest public properties in dense, park-poor neighborhoods, schoolyards present great opportunities to better connect schools to the communities they serve.
