Across the U.S., students in urban school districts are learning in poorly ventilated classrooms and playing on blacktop school grounds with little to no shade. As extreme heat and wildfire smoke become more common, these environmental inequities affect children’s focus, attention and memory — jeopardizing their opportunity to learn. Rather than wait for policy change, teachers unions across the nation are bargaining for greener schools, from outdoor learning spaces and water filtration stations to electric buses and green job pathways. Some are also integrating climate justice into curricula, teaching students the history of the labor and environmental justice movements. As teacher and author Kimi Waite says, “When teachers fight for environmental justice and teach their students about the importance of solidarity, they contribute to the tradition of youth-led climate movements and equip students to organize for the world they deserve.” The Progressive Magazine.
