The Power and Potential of Green Schoolyards
District-wide green schoolyard programs can address complex community problems.
School districts’ landscape management decisions profoundly impact generations of local residents whose perspectives are shaped through daily, outdoor experiences on school grounds. Devoting attention and resources to implementing district-wide, ecological systems-based improvements contributes significantly to addressing complex, interrelated issues, including: nature access for low-income communities; ecological infrastructure repair; improved teaching and learning environments; health and well being; and, civic engagement. Green schoolyards are a centerpiece of the vision to restore people’s relationship with the natural world.
