Federal funds support the development of community learning centers for academic enrichment during non-school hours
Green schoolyards can be part of federally-funded community enrichment centers. The U.S. Department of Education’s 21st Century Learning Centers provides over $1 billion in funding directly to states to support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children–particularly students who attend low-performing schools in high-poverty neighborhoods. The program helps students meet state and local academic standards in core subjects, such as reading and math, offers a broad array of enrichment activities that complement their regular academic programs, and offers literacy and other educational services to families of participating children.
