Regional Campaigns and Initiatives

Grassroots campaigns and initiatives, launched by regional coalitions, work on the state, regional and local level to create shared strategic visions and plans and to map out a process for implementation. Regional strategies include: public awareness campaigns and community events; legislation and policy changes; public education and advocacy. Each effort increases the number of people and organizations participating in and taking action to reconnect children with nature. Please let us know if there is a campaign or initiative in your region that should be on the map.
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
“A back-to-nature movement to reconnect children with the outdoors is burgeoning nationwide.”
— USA Today, Nov. 2006
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
