HOST CITY SPOTLIGHT: Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Atlanta is lovely in the spring and we can’t wait to see you there. The capital city of Georgia, Atlanta played an important role in both the U.S. Civil War and the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. While you’re there, you can visit the Atlanta History Center, which chronicles the city’s past, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, which is dedicated to Dr. King’s life, his work and the fight for civil rights.
Atlanta is known as “the city in a forest” for an abundance of trees not found in most major urban centers. Trees Atlanta, city government, community partners and scores of volunteers help maintain and preserve the city’s unique canopy, which covers nearly 50% of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
The City of Atlanta has made a major commitment to increasing equitable access to nature, participating in the Cities Connecting Children to Nature and Green Schoolyards Technical Assistance cohorts through our partnership with the National League of Cities. We are planning some exciting field trips and “walkshops” to showcase the great work happening in Atlanta, which is also home to our first Health & Nature Fellow, designed to ground our national technical assistance model with the power of local knowledge and relationships.
There are so many things to see and do in Atlanta, where the average high will be 80 degrees in May. You can find information about the city’s attractions, history and heritage, arts and culture, dining and entertainment, and more at Discover Atlanta. Here are just a few of our favorites:
